Many people have tried malted milk or malted shakes, but do you know who invented it?
Two brothers James and William Horlick from England developed it. James Horlick who was a pharmacist in London came up with a nutritional wheat and malt based supplement for infants. He was not getting anywhere in London and his brother William was here in Racine and he decided to move here. They formed their own company in 1873 here in Racine, Wisconsin. They trademarked the name "malted milk" in 1887.
When I was a child it was easy to get the malted flavor in tablets (kind of like candy) in jars. I do not know exactly when the stores around here stopped selling them, but I did a little research and did find a few sites that have them for sale.

Some other sites you might find interesting dealing with the two brothers, company, and/or malt in general.
