it is an early form of using a keyboard to type papers, letters, et cetera.
Christopher Latham Sholes , Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soulé,

There are a few websites
that do a really great job of explaining how the typewriter came into existence.

Salmon-A-Rama Has New Name...Big Fish Bash July 12-20, 2008

The BIG fishing contest for Racine
starts Saturday, 12 July 2008
and
ends Sunday, 20 July 2008.
This used to be called Salmon-A-Rama
and now it is called Big Fish Bash.
I think most people will still call it Salmon-A-Rama
either out of habit or because they can not remember the new name.
The new name is definitely appropriate since people catch fish other than salmon. I never could figure out why the contest had the name it did.
To find out times, prices, how to enter, and more click on this link.
There are two additional contests for anglers
in addition to the regular fishing contest.
The link to find out more is below.
Last year over 1,500 people entered the contest from 18 states.
That is very nice.
If you have never gone here it is actually kind of fun
even if you do not fish like me. LOL
There is food, music, and it can be exciting
if you happen to be there when someone comes in with a huge fish.

Fantasia Cancelled for Summerfest Friday, 27 June 2008

The Milwaukee news said tonight that
Fantasia
(an American Idol winner for those who do not know who she is)
cacelled her concert at Summerfest for tomorrow night.
The news at airtime did not know why she cancelled.
Hopefully it is not for anything too serious.
I know a lot of people paid good money for tickets
and hopefully you can get a refund or something.
The news did not say anything about that.
I did go to the Summerfest website
and to Fanatasia's website,
but there was nothing about
the cancellation
or what to do about tickets
at this writing.

Farmer's Market (Racine, Wisconsin)

Many people who live here know about
the Farmer's Market held Saturdays downtown in Racine
and the one on Tuesdays and Fridays at Regency Mall,
but I wonder how many people know about
the Southside Farmer's Market held Tuesdays and Fridays in West Racine?
Ok, I am sure there are quite a few who do, but I just learned about it today.
Southside Farmer's Market
West Racine
Southwest corner of
Washington Avenue
(Highway 20 for the out of towners)
and West Boulevard

I like knowing that the food is local and who I am buying from.
I just wish they were year round here.
I will try to check this one out real soon for everyone and report back in.
If you have visited any
farmer's markets in this area
please please
let me know in the comments or e-mail.
I would like to let people know where they are and how they are.

Thanks

I got to wondering
about the

The 2 links below are for the same thing:
The first one is the one off of Google and
the second one is where the first one takes you to.
This link is for work zones and detour information for the whole state of Wisconsin.
I am still searching for a site that will give details
on exactly what the city is doing,
the cost et cetera,
but I am having trouble finding one.
If anyone comes across one please leave in comments or
let me know and
I will add a link in another posting.
I have been mainly posting
the local road construction on
one of my other blogs, Mary's World.
I thought if anyone is coming to Wisconsin
a link to road constructions and
detours might be appreciated.
Thanks.

John Dillinger Gun On Display In Racine Police Station

It has been big news between Chicago and Milwaukee about Johnny Depp filming a movie about John Dillinger. That got me wondering if one of the guns (a Thompson submachine gun) that John Dillinger used was still on display here in Racine. It is and it is currently at the Racine Police Station. It had been on loan to the Racine Art Museum which stands on the site that the bank (American Bank and Trust) that Dillinger robbed once stood.

Dillinger and his ganged robbed the American Bank and Trust on November 20, 1933 and took $28,000 according to The Journal Times.

Of course for some very insane and stupid reason the movie Johnny Depp is NOT going to film that robbery even though it would make a good scene (according to the headline on the original article the bank president was kidknapped and tied to a tree). So, what have our local politicians done to try and bring revenue into this city???

A major Hollywood movie being filmed about the FBI's very first declared public enemy with what would be a very interesting scene and from what I can tell from different blogs and websites none of our politicians have even tried to get the movie here.

To read the full story please click on The Journal Times link below.

Like Mustard?? Check out Mount Horeb, Wisconsin

Mount Horeb, Wisconsin is the troll capital of the world. :D

http://www.trollway.com/

I personally have been to Mount Horeb and it is a charming little town. Look for the trolls all over the town (live trolls too). I did go into some of the shops. The people are friendly and do not make a person feel like they are intruding on them. Believe me that a lot of places make a person feel like they would rather you not be there.

I bought a gnome shaped cookie cutter in one store and a very pretty ceramic tile. I have that hanging up in my bedroom. It has a Dutch design on it. The shops are small and have much to search for. There is bound to be something for everyone.

They also have a mustard museum--no kidding!! :) You can even buy mustard from them.

Unfortunately I did not have time to visit the museum. :( I wanted to but we had to get back home. Maybe on my next trip. I thought it would be interesting to see all the different mustards they have.

They boast they have over 4,900 jars, bottles, and tubes from all 50 states and more than 60 countries. That is a lot of mustard.

To find out directions, times, they have links to mustard festivals and winners, to view You Tube mustard videos, and to even buy mustard from them click on the link below.

The Golden Rondelle Theater--SC Johnson

The Golden Rondelle was originally designed by Lippincott and Margulies as the SC Johnson Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1964-65.

At the Fair, the Golden Rondelle had a soaring superstructure of 90-foot high columns that arched inward to form a partial canopy over the rest of the building.

The film "To Be Alive!" was the main attraction to people, not the building itself. During the two six-month seasons of the fair more than 5 million people saw the film.

"To Be Alive!" won several awards including a citation from the New York Film Critics and an Oscar from the National Academy of Motion Pictures for best documentary short subject in 1966.

After the Fair, the theater was brought to Racine. It reopened in summer of 1967 with only the "saucer" part of the building attached to a new building at one of the Johnson Wax properties. The building that it is attached to was designed by Taliesen Associate Architects of Frank Lloyd Wright fame.

Link to Wisconsin Fairs, Festivals, & Other Attractions

If you are coming to Wisconsin for a visit this year and want to know what kind of fairs and festivals there are check out this site. It has listings for the entire state.

Psst.....This is great for people who live here too!!!! Ha Ha Ha Sorry, I could not help myself.

Seriously though this site also has listings for/to find,
accommodations,
shopping,
amusement parks,
casinos,
greyhound racing,
clubs/taverns,
drive-in movie theaters (yes they do still exist),
science and nature centers,
spas,
zoos,
spectator sports,
water parks and pools,
and tours.

http://www.travelwisconsin.com/Fairs_and_Festivals.aspx

I am also including a few links to festivals that many people here and elsewhere might or might not have heard of.

Juneteenth Jazz

University of Eau Claire 41st Jazz Festival

Oktoberfest in New Glarus, Wisconsin

(A personal note here--I have been in New Glarus several times and it is a beautiful small town with a German feel. I have not been to Oktoberfest though. This is one of my favorite small towns in Wisconsin.)

New Glarus also holds a Heidi fest every year. So, if you are a Heidi fan think about the festival.

Also, they hold a Wilhelm Tell Festival.

Summerfest

A Brief History of Wisconsin

I had planned on actually giving information about the origin and meaning of the name Wisconsin, but there seems to be conflicting information about that subject. The link below goes more in depth about that.

http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/

Some other information though:

There are more than 10,000 books with history about Wisconsin--Wow!!! That is a lot of books and I confess I had no idea there were that many books with history about my birth state.

This state was "born" after the last ice age about 13,000 years ago. People have always lived on the land here. Some were the Menominee and the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) and still preserve ancient narratives that place both groups of people here before the written history. There have also been finds from several other peoples around the state.

Wisconsin became the 30th state on May 29, 1848.

The Wisconsin Historical Society is a fantastic place to learn more about the history of the 30th state in the union. Once there you can find out where the museums, special events around the state, etc. are.

There is a tab for teachers and students, genealogy, photos, shopping, government buildings, and so many other tabs that I am not going to list them all.

I wish I had a computer when I was doing all my school projects in high school lol. This truly is a very informative site.

House On the Rock in Spring Green, WI

If you have not heard of this place and are coming to Wisconsin you should really check it out. This is a very unique place created by Alex Jordan. There are many rooms each with a different theme. I will list a few further down. It also has an amazing garden with statues and there is lodging near by and many other places to visit within driving distance. Alex Jordan had worked with Frank Lloyd Wright at one point.

The house began being built in the 1940's on top of Deer Shelter Rock about 60 feet tall (according to Wikipedia). I can not do it justice in my description, but the links below does have more information if you would like to check them out. They also have pictures to look at.

Some of the rooms at the house are:

"The Streets of Yesterday"---This is a recreation of an early twentieth century street with shop windows, etc.

"The Heritage of the Sea"---mmm.... This is a nautical theme with a 200 foot sea monster...

"The Music of Yesterday"---This houses a large collection of automated music machines, the world's largest working carousel (the carousel has 269 animals!!), and more.

There is also a dollhouse room, toys, banks, etc. and more being built and added to.

This is not to say that this place does not have problems. It can give a person the creeps, it is probably dusty in places, but there is something for just about everyone here. Check out the various websites and see if it interests you and if it does not then check to see what else is around the area.

Some suggestions: The Wisconsin Dells (the boat trips are my favorite to see the beautiful rock formations), there is a winery close by the Wisconsin Dells (but I have not been there yet), there are state parks, camping, fishing, small towns with some interesting summer festivals, Baraboo, Wisconsin has Circus World which can be fun for the children, and so so much more in that part of the state.

Like Malted Milk or Shakes???

Many people have tried malted milk or malted shakes, but do you know who invented it?
Two brothers James and William Horlick from England developed it. James Horlick who was a pharmacist in London came up with a nutritional wheat and malt based supplement for infants. He was not getting anywhere in London and his brother William was here in Racine and he decided to move here. They formed their own company in 1873 here in Racine, Wisconsin. They trademarked the name "malted milk" in 1887.

When I was a child it was easy to get the malted flavor in tablets (kind of like candy) in jars. I do not know exactly when the stores around here stopped selling them, but I did a little research and did find a few sites that have them for sale.
